Production Diary

Friday 7th January 2011:

Last lesson we did numerous things to kick start our new assignment off, Record.
We started off by posting our skills development on to our blog as well as posting what we are going to specialize in.
I chose to do print production and video but then later changed print to music production. I thought that I would learn more things in a scenario I had not yet discovered. This will ultimately give me a chance to open up new doors in the world of music.
When we left the computers, we went into the music studio where will set up the studio ready to record a cover of the Paramore song, Only Exception. I was playing the bass, Claire Bayliss was on guitar and Harvey played drums which we mic'd up before recording.
As well as recording a little cover, we learnt a few basic tips and tricks in the world of music. Such as when you record music, you record on something called "tracks" which allows you to manipulate sections of the music instead of the whole song.

Video Production:

Video Production:
Analysing music videos:
This is a great song from the man himself, Danny Byrd. The music video however, is hilarious! The video shows a story of an elderly woman who finds herself bored in her house next to a snoring old husband.  To be continued...

Music Production

Music Production:
I don’t really know a lot about music production so I learnt some new things during this research.
I discovered that when music is produced in the studio, it is recorded on something called “Tracks”
These are like layers from Photoshop, allowing you to create and manipulate certain parts of your product you wish to create.
Another technique I discovered was when using “Logic Pro” you can use something called “Reflex Editing” which allows you to just change different beats of an out of time drum beat. This easily allows you to change beats to fit the song better.

Skills Development

Print Production Skills:
The skills I already have in print production are the imagination, creativity and experience of using software and kits such as Photoshop. I can make sophisticated and professional logos, which I have made for some big companies already and also I can create beautiful looking posters for any client. Other things I am good at are working with 3D objects, also known as Computer Aided Design (CAD)
I use this software to create artifacts like the professional studios.

Video Production Skills:
I already have plenty of skills in video production as I use software like After Effects to make really beautiful motions. I know how to colour grade and how to white balance using the Sony A1 Cameras.
I also can use special effects such as the ones in big commercial films.
I can use Final Cut Pro on Mac as well as Sony Vegas on PC. Yet I feel more confident using Sony Vegas.
I use After Effects to Colour correct and make footage look as clean and neat as possible.

Choice of Medium

The two mediums I wish to specialize in are:
  1. Video Production
  2. Music Production
